Unknown airmen buried in the Hannover War Cemetery
Pic Grave Ref. Details
1. D. 6-8 Inscription: Sgt J Wilson, P/O L E Davis and one unknown airman

Date of Death: 16. January 1945

Place of Death: between Wolfshagen and Langelsheim

First buried: Village Cemetery Wolfshagen

Possible identity: This unknown airman is registered collectiveley with two crew of 102 Sqdn Halifax III LW179. From the informations still available it seems not unlikely that the graves 1. D. 1-8 contain the remains of only 7 airmen. It is said that four airmen were recovered from the wreckage of Halifax III LW179. Three more crew were found some distance away. An eighth crew was found several days later in the woods. As the bodies recovered from the wreckage were badly mangled these remains may belong to three and not to four airmen as the germans believed. However, the myth of an eighth unauthorized crew lives on.

2. D. 1-4A Inscription: Sgt W Beckthold, 7 unknown airmen and one unknown RAAF

Place of Death: Hannover area

First buried: Hannover (Limmer) Civil Cemetery, Graves 1927-1929, 1945-1946, 1958-1959 and 1961-1962

Possible identity: The former graves 1958-1959 and 1961-1962 in Limmer Civil Cemetery may have contained the remains of the missing crew of 103 Sqdn Lancaster III JB147 as the pilot W/O D H Loop was initially buried in grave 1960. Therefore the date on the headstone refering to four unknown airmen may be wrong.

The former Grave 1946 refers to an unidentified RAAF airman. It is said that this airman died on 9. October 1943 but there are indications that this airman already died on 27. September 1943.

The other four Graves 1927-1929 and 1945 formerly contained:

1. the remains of Sgt Beckthold who was found dead at Hannover-Stöcken. He was buried in Limmer Civil Cemetery. Unluckily his remains could not be identified after the war. So his name is registered collectively with the other unknowns.
